  Metallographic Grinding and Polishing Machine The core principle of the operation is to achieve the highest possible polishing rate, so that a single polishing pass during the machining process can rapidly eliminate damage. At the same time, the polished layer must not obscure the damaged microstructure in the final inspection, nor should it lead to misinterpretation of the microstructural features. These two requirements are inherently contradictory: the former calls for coarse grinding to ensure faster removal of the polished damage layer through reciprocating motion and to penetrate deeper into the damaged zone, whereas the latter demands the use of the finest polishing conditions, which produce a shallower polished layer but at a lower material-removal rate. The optimal approach is to implement the process in two stages, thereby reconciling these conflicting objectives.

First comes coarse polishing, the purpose of which is to remove the polishing-induced damage layer; this stage should be carried out at the highest possible polishing rate. The second step is to introduce controlled damage onto the rough polished surface—ideally, only minimal damage should be introduced. Finally, fine grinding (or final grinding) is performed to eliminate the surface damage incurred during coarse grinding and to minimize any remaining grinding-induced defects. During polishing, the ground and polished specimen must be held perfectly parallel and pressed evenly against the polishing cloth; excessive pressure can lead to the formation of new abrasion marks, so careful sample preparation and proper handling are essential.
