Metallographic Grinding and Polishing Machine The purpose of polishing is to remove the fine abrasive marks left on the polished surface of metallographic specimens by fine grinding, thereby producing a smooth, flawless mirror finish. Although polishing is the final step in metallographic sample preparation and results in a smooth mirror surface, experienced metallographers emphasize that extra care must be taken during polishing, because the polishing process can only eliminate the very thin surface layer and any residual metal; thus, the quality of polishing is largely dependent on the quality of the preceding steps. In some cases, deep abrasion marks may remain on the ground surface prior to polishing, and even prolonged polishing may fail to remove them, necessitating a second polishing pass.
