How to Maintain and Service a Rockwell Hardness Tester

When the Rockwell hardness tester is not in use for an extended period, cover the instrument with a dust cover.

Regularly apply a small amount of machine oil to the contact surfaces between the lead screw and the handwheel.

Before use, the top surface of the lead screw and the end face of the worktable shall be thoroughly cleaned.

If a large error in the hardness reading is detected:

1.  Remove the worktable and inspect whether its contact surface with the lead screw is clean;

2.  Check whether the lead screw guard is lifting the worktable.

3.  Check whether the indenter is damaged.

If, when the major test force is applied, the indicator pointer initially rotates rapidly and then slows down, this indicates that the damper’s internal mechanism… If there is too little oil, lift the felt pad at the top of the buffer and slowly inject clean 20# Engine oil. At the same time, repeatedly push and pull the handle to make the piston move up and down several times, completely exhausting the air from the buffer until the piston reaches the bottom. Continue until oil begins to overflow from the top.

Regularly verify the hardness tester’s accuracy using the standard hardness blocks provided with the instrument.

1.  Clean the workbench and the standard hardness block thoroughly, and conduct tests on the working surface of the hardness block; testing on the supporting surface is strictly prohibited.

2.  Large indication error Except as provided in Item 4 of this section Inspect the support surface of the standard hardness block for burrs; if any are present, deburr using an oilstone.

3.  When testing at different locations on the standard hardness block, the block shall be slid across the worktable, and the Vickers hardness tester shall remain in contact with the worktable.

This instrument shall be subject to regular verification and periodic metrological verification.
